In the winter of 2022, a fatal encounter unfolded at a Phoenix gas station, forever altering the lives of two families. Shane Robert Knoll, a 30-year-old man, was working at a Chevron convenience store near 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road on the evening of December 21st when the incident occurred. Friends and family remembered him as a hardworking and dependable person who enjoyed skateboarding, cars, and bicycles.
That evening, an altercation arose when Knoll asked 40-year-old Jaime
Flores to leave the store. Flores refused, and a physical struggle ensued between the two men. During the fight, Knoll drew a gun, but Flores managed to take the weapon from him. Flores then shot and killed Knoll.
Following the shooting, Flores walked out of the convenience store and took his own life. The event was characterized by police as a murder-suicide. Knoll's mother later shared that her son had frequently dealt with crime at his workplace and had to call the police on multiple occasions regarding trespassing. She described him as a good kid who took care of his family and friends.
