In the early evening of May 21, 2023, a call about a person with a gun brought Phoenix police officers to the area near Third Street and the Interstate 17 access road. Upon arrival around 6:00 p.m., the officers did not find the suspect but soon heard the sound of gunshots nearby. Their attention was then drawn to an encampment situated beneath the Interstate 17 Maricopa Freeway.
There, they discovered 49-year-old Jose Estrada, a Hispanic male, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency medical personnel from the Phoenix Fire Department, Estrada's injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The tragic event marked another life lost to gun violence in the city.
The investigation into the shooting led detectives to identify 36-year-old Billy Jameson as the suspect. Nearly three weeks after the incident, on June 8, 2023, Jameson was located and taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Maricopa County Jail on several charges, including first-degree murder, with his bond set at $1 million. The authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information regarding the case to come forward.
