In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Phoenix, Arizona, the life of 17-year-old Malachi Tyler Henningham was cut short by gunfire. On May 28, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Phoenix police responded to a call of a person shot in the vicinity of 13000 South 48th Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered a teenage boy who had sustained at least one gunshot wound.
He was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation took a grim turn when officers canvassing the area discovered a vehicle that had collided with a tree nearby. Inside the car was Malachi Tyler Henningham, who had also been shot at least once. Tragically, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The car he was in was described as being riddled with bullets and was found outside of a popular frozen custard shop in an Ahwatukee shopping center.
In the wake of his death, family and friends gathered for a vigil to remember the young man they described as a loving son, teammate, and friend. He had recently embraced the role of a father to his two-month-old son, Messiah. His mother expressed her deep pain and the community's shared grief, emphasizing her desire for justice for her son.
As of the initial reports, the Phoenix Police Department's investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the homicide. Detectives are actively investigating the incident and have urged anyone with information to come forward and contact Silent Witness, with the possibility of a reward for information that leads to an arrest. The family has also set up a GoFundMe to assist with funeral expenses.
