In the summer of 2023, the life of 54-year-old Xavier Morales was tragically cut short in a double homicide in Tucson, Arizona. On the 8th of June, Morales and a 35-year-old woman named Sonia Zaragoza were discovered deceased inside a room at the Minsk Hotel. An employee of the hotel made the grim discovery, finding both individuals unresponsive and with signs of trauma.
Authorities were immediately called to the scene, and the Tucson Police Department launched a homicide investigation
into the suspicious deaths of Morales and Zaragoza. Initially, investigators had not publicly identified any suspects, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths were unclear. The community was left in shock and mourning, with friends and family of Sonia Zaragoza holding a candlelight vigil at the hotel to honor her memory.
Later that same month, a breakthrough was made in the case. On June 28, 2023, police arrested Darnell Warren Jackson in connection with the killings of Xavier Morales and Sonia Zaragoza. Jackson was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, bringing a measure of progress to the investigation, though the motive for the tragic event was not immediately released.
