In the early hours of May 20, 2022, a violent encounter in a Tucson, Arizona, apartment complex ended the life of 18-year-old Edwin Jonathan Gutierrez. The incident, which unfolded shortly after 12:30 a.m. at a residence on South Headley Road, was initially reported as a shooting, prompting a response from the Tucson Police Department. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Gutierrez inside an apartment with life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate medical aid rendered by the officers and the subsequent efforts of the Tucson Fire Department, Gutierrez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ensuing homicide investigation by the Tucson Police Department revealed a more complex story than a simple shooting. Detectives learned that the event was not a random act of violence but rather the outcome of a planned criminal act. Further investigation linked Uranga and Navarro to another deadly home invasion that had occurred earlier that month, revealing a pattern of violent criminal activity.
