In the early hours of April 13, 2024, a violent altercation in south Phoenix tragically cut short the life of 19-year-old Elijah Sanchez. The young man, identified as Black / African American, was pronounced dead at the scene of a shooting near the intersection of 19th Avenue and Roeser Road.
The incident, which unfolded around 2:45 a.m., appears to have stemmed from a dispute involving four men. Gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of Sanchez and 38-year-old Lucio Lopez Segura.
A third man was also struck by bullets and transported to a local hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Phoenix police responded to the chaotic scene, where they discovered the victims. A fourth man, who was not injured but was determined to have been involved in the preceding altercation, was located at the scene. He was detained by authorities for questioning and was subsequently released pending further investigation into the deadly shooting.
As of now, the investigation into the deaths of Elijah Sanchez and Lucio Lopez Segura remains active. While details suggest a fight escalated to an exchange of gunfire, authorities have not publicly identified a definitive suspect or made any arrests in connection with the homicides.
