In February 2014, a domestic dispute in a Phoenix, Arizona apartment complex escalated to a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 26-year-old Fernando Ruelas, Jr. The young man was shot on a landing of the complex where he resided with his girlfriend, Ashley Elizabeth Eide. The incident cut short a life that had begun in 1987, leaving family and friends to mourn a future that would never be realized.
Phoenix police responded to the scene to find Ruelas with a fatal gunshot wound.
Their investigation revealed that the shooting occurred in the midst of a heated argument between Ruelas and Eide. According to statements Eide made to investigators, the argument had turned physical, with Ruelas allegedly striking her multiple times. Eide claimed that she was in fear for her life when she fired the weapon, but also stated that she had not intended to shoot him. When officers arrived, they noted that Eide had visible injuries to her face.
The investigation led to the arrest of Ashley Elizabeth Eide in connection with the shooting death of her boyfriend. Eide eventually pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter and misconduct involving weapons. In March 2015, a Maricopa County judge sentenced her to serve four years in prison for her role in Ruelas's death. The sentence also mandated a subsequent three years of supervised probation, bringing a legal conclusion to a tragic and violent domestic encounter.
