In the mid-afternoon hours of October 26, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm in a midtown Tucson, Arizona neighborhood. When the echo of the shots faded, 41-year-old Tyler Gonzales, was left with life-threatening injuries. The shooting occurred in the 5400 block of East 30th Street, near the intersection of South Craycroft Road and East 29th Street. Tucson police officers were dispatched to the scene just after 3 p.m.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered Gonzales suffering from obvious signs of gunshot trauma. He was quickly transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the severity of his injuries proved to be too great, and Tyler Gonzales was pronounced dead at the hospital. The initial investigation was taken over by homicide detectives who began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. While they processed the scene for forensic evidence and followed up on early leads, no immediate suspects were identified.
The investigation into Gonzales's death continued for nearly a month. A significant breakthrough came on November 22, 2024, when the Graham County Sheriff's Office apprehended a suspect near Thatcher, Arizona. The man, identified as 33-year-old Luis H. Pina, was spotted riding a bicycle in the vicinity of Robinson Ranch Road and 8th Street. Investigators had established probable cause to link Pina to the homicide, and a warrant had been issued for his arrest on charges of both homicide and robbery. At the time of his arrest, Pina was found to be in possession of a handgun. Following his capture, he was booked into the Graham County Adult Detention Facility and was subsequently transferred to the custody of Pima County law enforcement on November 27 to face the charges related to the death of Tyler Gonzales.
