On the night of Friday, February 21, 2014, a gathering of teenage friends and relatives in the basement of a home near 54th and Spaulding streets in Omaha, Nebraska, turned tragic. Dominique Dewayne Hollie, a 17-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot in the midst of this assembly. Police were called to the residence around 10 p.m. and found Dominique, who did not survive his injuries.
The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the devastating impact of youth gun violence.
Dominique had relocated to Omaha from Mississippi to live with his grandparents and help care for his grandfather who was battling cancer. Family members described him as smart, funny, and deeply loyal, someone who always put his family first and was considered their backbone. The altercation that led to his death reportedly began when Dominique stood up for his sister and cousin after a remark was made about them by his friend, Christopher Spears.
In the ensuing argument, Dominique reportedly brandished a shotgun that was in his room before putting it away. Spears then took the same shotgun, waved it around, pointed it at Dominique's head, and, despite telling him he would shoot, pulled the trigger. Family members, including Dominique's sister, witnessed the horrific event.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement began an investigation that quickly led to the arrest of another 17-year-old, Christopher Spears, who was identified by Dominique's family as one of his best friends. In March 2015, Spears, then 18, was sentenced for the killing. The judge in the case stated he did not believe Spears intended to kill his friend but condemned the act of pointing a loaded gun at someone. Spears apologized to both his and Dominique's families in court, claiming he never intended to hurt anyone. He was sentenced to 15 to 22 years in prison and would be eligible for parole after serving 10 years. In a remarkable display of grace, Dominique's mother forgave Spears in court, expressing that forgiveness was necessary for everyone to move on.
