In the late hours of a Saturday night in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of 18-year-old Dayton Wenz was tragically cut short. On August 6, 2022, after 11:00 p.m., Omaha police officers were dispatched to the area of North 34th and Davenport Streets following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Dayton Wenz, a Caucasian male, was found on the sidewalk, suffering from serious injuries sustained from gunfire.
Emergency medical personnel rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led to the identification and arrest of three individuals. The Omaha Police Department's Homicide Unit took 21-year-old Jordan Humphrey into custody, charging him with second-degree murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony, possession of a defaced firearm, two counts of possession with intent to distribute, and tampering with evidence. Two other teenagers were also implicated in the events surrounding Wenz's death. Eighteen-year-old Schuyler Buckingham-Yeoman and 19-year-old Alicia Granneman were arrested and charged with accessory to a felony.
The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man described as goofy and loving, someone who always knew how to make people smile. Dayton was a graduate of Omaha Central High School and had worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor. His death, a result of gun violence, left a void in the lives of his family and friends.
