In the early morning hours of October 18, 2014, a gathering of friends in a South Omaha, Nebraska home was shattered by sudden violence. Jose Fabila, a 23-year-old Hispanic male, was inside a residence near 24th and Q streets with friends when shots were fired into the house. One of the bullets struck Fabila, fatally wounding him. He was a father with another child on the way.
The bullets came through a kitchen window, and friends who were with him at the time recounted the shock and horror of the event.
The Omaha Police Department began an immediate investigation into the shooting. Within a week of the incident, their efforts led to the apprehension of four individuals in connection with Jose Fabila's death. On October 24, 2014, authorities announced the arrests and the charges filed against the suspects. The swift action brought a sense of resolution to a community shaken by the senseless act of violence.
One individual, Kevin Mejia, was charged with murder for his alleged role in the shooting death of Fabila. In addition to the primary suspect, three other people were taken into custody. Jessica Gusman and Matteo Kundra were both charged as accessories to a felony, accused of assisting after the crime had been committed. A fourth individual, James Vega, faced charges for his involvement, specifically for shooting at an occupied dwelling.
