In the late evening of August 19, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in a northeast Omaha neighborhood that claimed the life of 33-year-old Lamont Slaughter, a Black male. Having just returned home with groceries for his family, Slaughter was gunned down in the doorway of his residence located in the 3000 block of Himebaugh Avenue. The sound of numerous gunshots prompted a ShotSpotter alert around 9:43 p.m., bringing Omaha Police Department officers to the scene. Upon their arrival, they discovered Slaughter with gunshot wounds.

First aid was administered by the responding officers until Omaha Fire Department medics arrived and transported him to a local medical center in extremely critical condition. Despite their efforts, Slaughter succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The incident was particularly harrowing as Slaughter's young children were playing on a trampoline in the yard at the time of the shooting, and were nearly struck by the errant bullets.

The Omaha Police Department is investigating the death as a homicide. As of early 2024, the case remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no specific suspects publicly identified. Investigators have revealed that a newer model black car or SUV with some type of emblem on the back was seen in the area at the time of the shooting. Despite following up on initial tips, law enforcement has stated that those leads have led to dead ends. Authorities have described Slaughter as a well-known and hardworking family man and have not determined a clear motive for the shooting or if he was the intended target. A significant reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest in the ongoing investigation, as police continue to appeal to the community for assistance in bringing closure to Lamont Slaughter's family.
