Markeise Dunn, a 16-year-old Black male, was shot late on the morning of November 26, 2016, near 24th and Pratt Streets in Omaha while walking his girlfriend to a bus stop. Witnesses described a car pulling up alongside before gunfire erupted. Officers found Dunn critically wounded around 10:30 10:45 a.m.; he was taken to Creighton University Medical Center, where he died.
Early alerts asked the public to look for a maroon four-door vehicle with California plates, and a reward was posted for tips.
Investigators later identified and arrested 21-year-old Otis L. Walker, who was booked on charges including first-degree murder, use of a weapon to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He was held without bond while awaiting trial, and prosecutors alleged the shooting came after a passenger in the car asked Dunn and his girlfriend where they were from before opening fire.
Walker s first trial in June 2019 ended in a mistrial when jurors couldn t reach a verdict. In a second trial, a Douglas County jury acquitted him on March 17, 2021, of first-degree murder and related gun charges in Dunn s drive-by killing. Although he was cleared of the homicide, a judge later imposed the maximum sentence 20 years in prison for witness tampering tied to the case. With no one convicted of the shooting itself, Dunn s killing remains unsolved.
