In the early morning hours of January 12, 2025, a night that began with socializing at an after-hours club near 24th and Binney streets in Omaha, Nebraska, ended in tragedy for Brandon Jones, a 37-year-old Black / African American man. An altercation at the establishment led to Jones being asked to leave. He later returned, armed with a gun and reportedly making threats to "spray the place."
What followed was a chaotic scene as Jones opened fire, injuring four other people inside the
club. In response to the threat, individuals within the venue returned fire. In the exchange of gunfire, Jones sustained fatal injuries. Omaha police officers, responding to a ShotSpotter alert that detected at least 14 gunshots, arrived to a large crowd and discovered Jones critically wounded. He was transported to Nebraska Medicine, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The four other individuals wounded in the incident, identified as Cameron Brown, 32, Derrick Bothwell, 48, Robert Johnson, 55, and Phillip Gaines, 57, were all treated at local hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries and were expected to recover. An investigation into the shooting was launched by the Omaha Police Department.
Following the investigation, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine announced that no charges would be filed in connection with the death of Brandon Jones. The official determination was that Jones had initiated the violence, and those who returned fire acted in justifiable self-defense. The case was subsequently closed, with authorities citing the mix of alcohol and heightened emotions as contributing factors to the tragic escalation of events. Jones had been released from prison in October on previous felony assault and weapons charges.
