Alonzo Jones, a 28-year-old Black/African American man, died on September 5, 2021, in Lincoln, Nebraska, following a shooting at the Tanglewood apartment complex where he resided. The incident unfolded on a Sunday morning when Jones returned to his apartment to find 23-year-old Lendell Harris with a woman they were both romantically involved with.
An altercation ensued between the two men.
According to statements made by Harris to the police, he shot Jones after Jones allegedly reached for his gun during the fight. Immediately following the shooting, Harris turned himself into the Lancaster County Jail. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, Harris's attorneys argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense. The case went to trial, and in May 2022, a jury found Lendell Harris not guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter. The woman involved in the situation reportedly gave conflicting testimony about the events that transpired. Following the verdict, Harris was acquitted of the charges related to the death of Alonzo Jones.
