Brian Mortensen, a 32-year-old white male from Orlando, FL, tragically lost his life on March 18, 2016. Mortensen, who had recently become a father, was working as a crew leader for Dave’s Fence Inc., installing a fence at the Magnolia Court Condominiums. During this time, he was struck by a stray bullet fired during a domestic dispute. The incident occurred when Jakell Ward, a 21-year-old resident of the complex, got into an argument with his pregnant girlfriend.
In a fit of rage, Ward fired multiple shots at his girlfriend as she attempted to flee in a car. Unfortunately, one of the bullets missed its intended target and hit Mortensen in the chest and arm, causing severe injuries that led to his death.
Mortensen's injuries were catastrophic; the bullet punctured his lung and lodged near his heart. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries after 28 days of hospitalization. His death left his family devastated, especially his wife and newborn daughter, Charlotte Rose. Mortensen was remembered by his colleagues and loved ones as a dedicated worker and a loving family man who had a passion for superheroes.
Jakell Ward was arrested on the day of the shooting and initially charged with attempted murder. However, following Mortensen's death, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder. Ward was held without bond in the Orange County Jail. During the trial, Ward admitted to firing the shots but claimed he did not intend to hit anyone. Despite his claims, he was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The court proceedings were emotionally charged, with Mortensen's family and friends providing heartfelt testimonies about the impact of his loss.
