On the evening of April 4, 2014, a visit to a friend's apartment in Lincoln, Nebraska, turned tragic for 21-year-old Justin Felty, a White/Caucasian male. At approximately 7:30 p.m., within the LionsGate apartment complex located near 52nd and R streets in the northern part of the city, an unforeseen event led to the end of his young life. He was in the company of a friend when a gun his friend was handling unintentionally discharged.
The single bullet struck Felty in the chest.
When emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, they found him without a pulse. Despite their immediate efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead. The Lincoln Police Department began an investigation into the incident, with Captain David Beggs leading the initial response to what was reported as an accidental shooting.
During their investigation, the police interviewed two other individuals who were present in the apartment at the time of the fatal incident. Based on their preliminary findings, authorities stated that there were no signs of a confrontation between Felty and his friend, and the circumstances pointed towards an accidental discharge of the firearm. The Lancaster County Attorney's Office also opened an investigation into the matter. In the immediate aftermath, no arrests were made or citations issued in connection with the shooting. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding his death.
