On the evening of July 5, 2024, Francisco Javier Alvis, a 25-year-old Hispanic/Latino man from Lincoln, Nebraska, drove his white pickup truck to a Russ’s Market parking lot near South Coddington Avenue and West ‘A’ Street. Investigators later said he was there for a marijuana deal and, feeling uneasy, had asked a friend to be nearby for "security."
Around 10 p.m., Ge’Auvieon Crayton arrived in a silver Jeep. He and another man, Kaeylab Gonzales, climbed into Alvis's truck.
The meeting was suddenly interrupted when a friend of Alvis’s, driving a maroon Jeep, pulled into the lot to say hello. As the friend approached, gunfire erupted inside the pickup. Wounded, Alvis scrambled out of his truck and ran to the maroon Jeep, grabbing onto the driver's-side door as his friend sped away from the scene.
Alvis clung to the moving vehicle for about a mile. According to court documents, he pleaded with his friend to "save himself" and let him go. The friend stopped near the intersection of South Folsom and West ‘A’ streets, where Alvis fell to the ground. First responders found him there with three gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators found evidence of a chaotic scene, including spent 9mm and .40 caliber casings, suggesting two different firearms had been used. They noted a bullet hole in the driver’s door of Alvis's truck that was consistent with a shot fired from inside, as well as a bullet hole in the maroon Jeep. Police reported that Alvis had a fully loaded 9mm handgun on him, but it was on "safe" and did not have a round in the chamber. The man who had been there for security was later arrested on a separate charge after police said he returned to Alvis’s truck and took the marijuana.
The day after the shooting, police arrested 20-year-old Ge’Auvieon Crayton and charged him with first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. The investigation continued, and in August 2024, a SWAT team arrested a second suspect, 20-year-old Kaeylab Gonzales. He faced charges including first-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Investigators cited surveillance footage and electronic communications that connected both men to the planned drug deal.
In the court proceedings that followed, the cases against the two men moved forward on separate paths. On October 2, 2026, Kaeylab Gonzales pleaded guilty to the amended charges of manslaughter and use of a firearm to commit a felony. The case against Ge’Auvieon Crayton continued; in May 2025, his jury trial was postponed at his attorney’s request. As of October 2026, Gonzales's guilty plea was the latest development in the case.
