On the morning of December 4, 2025, a fatal confrontation occurred at a convenience store in Lincoln, Nebraska, resulting in the death of 24-year-old JaRell Wheeler. The incident took place shortly after 11:00 a.m. at a Casey's General Store located near South 13th and E Streets. Wheeler was present at the location when he encountered his brother, 23-year-old Emanuel Greenwalt-Claypool, who was working as a delivery driver and had arrived to transport products to the store.
According to
investigators who reviewed surveillance footage and witness statements, the interaction between the brothers escalated rapidly. Wheeler initially left the store but returned shortly after, reportedly running toward Greenwalt-Claypool with his arm raised in a manner that authorities later described as aggressive. In response to the advancing threat, Greenwalt-Claypool drew a 9mm handgun from his waistband and fired multiple shots. Wheeler sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. A 38-year-old bystander inside the store was also struck by gunfire but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene to find Greenwalt-Claypool present; he had surrendered his weapon and cooperated with the initial investigation. He was taken into custody and booked into the Lancaster County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and second-degree assault. However, the legal trajectory of the case shifted in the days following the arrest.
By December 9, 2025, the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office announced that no criminal charges would be filed against Greenwalt-Claypool at that time. After a review of the evidence, including video footage and the shooter's statements that he feared for his safety, prosecutors determined that the state could not disprove a claim of self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt. The investigation indicated that Greenwalt-Claypool was not the initial aggressor and had reacted to Wheeler rushing at him with a raised fist. Consequently, the suspect was released, although authorities noted that the investigation into the death remained open.
