On the evening of April 25, 2017, 29-year-old Brian Brooks, a Black male from Wilmington, Delaware, was fatally shot in the chest. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. in the 900 block of Maryland Avenue. Police were alerted by multiple 911 calls and a ShotSpotter notification that detected gunfire in the area.
