On August 28, 2023, Wilmington police responded to reports of gunfire near East 24th and North Pine Streets at approximately 6:32 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of 28-year-old Zaahir Thorton near a swing set in Brown-Burton Winchester Park. First responders noted that Thorton was unresponsive, with "blood all around his mouth," and was "cold to the touch," indicating he had been deceased for some time.
