Paxton Reece Edwards was a 3-year-old White/Caucasian boy living with his family in the Prices Corner area of Wilmington, Delaware. He was remembered as a quiet, gentle child who enjoyed playing with toy trucks, watching PJ Masks and spending time close to his mother. On July 9, 2018, Paxton was inside the family’s home in the 2700 block of Ferris Road with his mother, Julie Burton Edwards, his brother Jacob and his sister Brinley.
Shortly before 8 p.m., Delaware State Police troopers responded to the residence and entered a scene that encompassed the entire immediate family. On the second floor, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds: Paxton; Julie; six-year-old Jacob; four-year-old Brinley; and Paxton’s father, Matthew Edwards. All five were dead. Investigators initially treated the home as an active death investigation while the bodies were transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for examination. Police told nearby residents that there was no continuing threat to the surrounding community.
The investigation determined that Matthew Edwards had shot Julie and all three children before killing himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Autopsies confirmed that the family’s deaths resulted from gunfire and that the incident was a murder-suicide. Paxton therefore died alongside his mother and siblings at the hands of his father, who was found inside the same home. Authorities did not identify another assailant or report evidence that anyone outside the household participated in the killings.
In the aftermath, people who knew the family struggled to reconcile the violence with the life they had observed. Neighbors recalled seeing the children playing outside and described them as happy. Friends characterized Julie as an attentive and devoted mother who centered much of her life on her children, including advocacy connected to Jacob’s Williams syndrome. Matthew had also been seen spending time outdoors with the children, and acquaintances said his actions were completely unexpected.
Reports from neighbors and family friends suggested that the household had recently been under strain. One neighbor said Matthew had spoken emotionally about losing his job and experiencing marital problems shortly before the deaths. A friend of Julie similarly recalled indications of tension in the marriage. These accounts provided possible context, but police did not publicly establish a definitive motive explaining why Matthew killed his family.
No arrest was made because the sole identified suspect, Matthew Edwards, died from the self-inflicted wound at the scene. Consequently, there were no criminal charges, prosecution, trial or conviction. The official finding of murder-suicide closed the possibility of bringing the perpetrator before a court, leaving the forensic determination and police investigation as the final legal accounting of Paxton’s death and the deaths of his mother and siblings.
