Brinley Ann Edwards, a 4-year-old White girl, lived with her parents and two brothers in the Prices Corner area near Wilmington, Delaware. On the evening of July 9, 2018, Delaware State Police were sent to the family's home in the 2700 block of Ferris Road after authorities were alerted to a possible emergency. When troopers entered the residence, they discovered five members of the Edwards family dead from gunshot wounds.
Brinley was found with her mother, Julie Edwards, and her brothers, Jacob and Paxton, on the second floor of the home. Her father, Matthew Edwards, was also found dead inside.
Investigators determined that Matthew Edwards had shot and killed his wife and all three children before turning the gun on himself. The Delaware Division of Forensic Science performed autopsies, and authorities officially classified the deaths as a murder-suicide by gunshot. Police publicly identified Matthew as the person responsible, making him the sole known suspect in Brinley's killing. Officials did not announce that another person had participated, assisted him, or was being sought in connection with the deaths.
The killings stunned neighbors who remembered the children playing outside and described the household as one that had appeared active and happy. People who knew Julie spoke of her devotion to her children, while neighbors recalled seeing the Edwards children together during play dates and in the family's yard. Those outward signs of ordinary family life offered little warning of the violence that would take place inside the home. Public reports did not establish a motive explaining why Matthew killed his family, and authorities released no account of a dispute, note, or precipitating event that conclusively explained his actions.
There were no arrests because the identified suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. As a result, prosecutors filed no criminal charges, and there was no trial, plea, sentencing, or conviction. The forensic ruling and police investigation served as the final official determination of responsibility: Brinley and the other members of her family were homicide victims, while Matthew's death was ruled a suicide. The case was therefore considered resolved without court proceedings, with no surviving suspect left to prosecute.
