Janiya Monae Henry, a 17-year-old Black female, was killed during a violent home invasion in Wilmington, Delaware, during the early morning of March 11, 2019. She was inside a residence on West 26th Street with her boyfriend, Christian Coffield, when masked gunmen entered the home. At approximately 4:30 a.m., neighbors were awakened by a prolonged burst of gunfire, with some recalling roughly a dozen shots.
Police arrived minutes later and found Janiya and Christian fatally wounded on the second floor. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Accounts from neighbors and a family friend described an organized and apparently deliberate attack. Reports differed slightly on whether two or three masked men entered the residence, but witnesses consistently said that members of Christian's family, including his mother and younger siblings, were detained at gunpoint downstairs while other intruders went upstairs. One gunman reportedly ordered the family to remain where they were and indicated that he did not intend to hurt them. Moments later, the attackers upstairs opened fire on Janiya and Christian. The intruders then fled, leaving the other occupants physically unharmed.
The circumstances suggested that the young couple may have been specifically targeted rather than killed during a random burglary. A family friend said he believed the gunmen knew whom they were looking for, although police did not publicly confirm that conclusion or disclose a motive. Authorities also did not announce whether anything had been stolen from the home. Investigators spent hours processing the residence and surrounding area, gathering evidence and interviewing the surviving occupants and neighbors, but released few details about what they recovered.
Janiya and Christian had recently become parents to a baby boy born approximately three months before the killings. Their child was staying elsewhere on the night of the attack and was not exposed to the gunfire. Relatives remembered Janiya as a devoted young mother who spoke frequently about her son and wanted to build a better life for him. She had attended Brandywine High School and was described in her obituary as deeply devoted to her child and surrounded by a large family that included her parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents.
The double homicide prompted a public outpouring of grief. Friends, relatives and community members gathered for a prayer vigil in Wilmington shortly after the shooting, mourning two teenagers whose lives had ended inside a home filled with family members. Janiya's funeral service was held on March 18, 2019, at Mother U.A.M.E. Church in Wilmington, followed by burial at Riverview Cemetery. Her infant son survived her.
No suspects were publicly identified in the initial investigation, and contemporary reports stated that no arrests had been made. The assailants were described only as masked men, leaving witnesses unable to provide publicly reported names or detailed facial descriptions. A review of available credible online reporting did not locate a later announcement of an arrest, criminal charge, trial or conviction specifically connected to the murders of Janiya Henry and Christian Coffield. The identities of the gunmen and the motive behind the attack therefore remain publicly unresolved.
