Dupree Burroughs was a 31‑year‑old Black man from Smyrna, Delaware. On July 22, 2019, he was fatally shot while performing his duties as a contractor for Delmarva Power, at a work site in Wilmington, Delaware. He and a co‑worker were installing a new gas main and service lines to homes and businesses near downtown Wilmington when a gunman opened fire, striking both men.
