On August 28, 2023, Wilmington Police were called to the area of 24th and Pine Streets, where they discovered 26-year-old male victim Zaahir Thorton suffering from gunshot wounds. The young Black man was transported to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
