On July 23, 1988, Lewiston Police Officer David R. Payne, aged 26, responded to a report of a vehicle that had veered off River Road around 3:00 p.m. Upon arrival, he encountered Nicolo Leone, a parolee from New York and former Lewiston resident, who had abandoned the car and fled into the nearby woods.
