On a cold February day in 2011, the life of Robert A. Orr, a 53-year-old White/Caucasian male from Readfield, Maine, was violently cut short in an act of betrayal that shook his quiet community. What began as an act of kindness, opening his home to a couple in need, ended in a brutal murder and a desperate attempt to erase the crime with fire.

Silva Jr., 32, and his girlfriend, Lindsay Spence, to help them get back on their feet. Orr, a man known for his willingness to help others, reportedly treated Silva like a son. This trust, however, was tragically misplaced. Driven by a desire for money and drugs, Silva and Spence discovered a safe, guns, and cash within the Orr residence, which allegedly sparked the plan to rob the man who had shown them kindness.
On the evening of February 8, 2011, while Janet Orr was away from home working as a home healthcare provider, the sinister plan unfolded. Lindsay Spence would later recount to investigators that she was awakened by the sound of gunfire. She then witnessed a horrific scene: Robert Orr, shot in the head with one of his own guns, slumped in his living room chair. In a calculated effort to conceal the murder, Silva set the house ablaze. The fire department, alerted to the inferno in the early hours of the next morning, would later discover Orr's remains in the charred debris of his home.
Following the murder, Silva and Spence fled the scene. Silva escaped in Orr's stolen truck, taking with him firearms, jewelry, and Orr's dog. Spence left in her own car. The stolen items were quickly sold in Massachusetts to purchase heroin. Their flight from justice was short-lived. Just two days later, authorities apprehended David B. Silva Jr. at his parents' home in Carver, Massachusetts. Lindsay Spence was with him at the time of the arrest but was not charged in connection with the murder. In April 2011, a grand jury indicted Silva on charges of murder, arson, and robbery.
In January 2013, to spare the Orr family the trauma of a full trial, David B. Silva Jr. entered an Alford plea. This legal maneuver allowed him to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution had sufficient evidence for a conviction. He was sentenced to 43 years in prison for the murder of Robert Orr, robbery, and arson. The resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to a grieving family and community, but the memory of Robert Orr's tragic and senseless death endures. The man convicted of his murder, David Silva, later died in a New Jersey prison in December 2024 following an encounter with correctional officers.
