On a crisp November day in 1998, the small town of Danforth, Maine, was rocked by a violent confrontation that ended in the death of 43-year-old Bobby Brown, a White male. The fatal encounter took place on November 9th at the residence of another local man, 42-year-old Randy McGowan. Brown had gone to the home with his girlfriend, Jamie Merrill, for the purpose of collecting her personal belongings.
What began as a domestic errand quickly escalated into a deadly dispute.
An argument broke out between the two men, culminating in McGowan fatally shooting Brown. Following the incident, McGowan claimed he had acted in self-defense, asserting that Brown had lunged at him, leaving him with no choice but to fire his 9mm handgun.
Despite his claims, Randy McGowan was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Bobby Brown. The case went to trial, and a jury ultimately convicted McGowan of murder. He was sentenced to serve 28 years in prison for his actions. In the years that followed, McGowan sought to have his conviction overturned. He filed an appeal based on the argument that he had received ineffective legal counsel during his trial. However, the state's highest court reviewed the case and ultimately upheld the original conviction, finding that any potential errors made by his defense did not result in an unfair trial.
