In the quiet town of Bowdoin, Maine, a tragedy unfolded on April 18, 2023, shattering the peace of the rural community. David Eaton, a 66-year-old Caucasian male, was found dead at the home of his friends, Robert and Patti Eger. David, along with his wife Cynthia, were visiting the Egers at their residence. The discovery was made after a concerned relative, unable to reach Patti Eger, went to the house and found a scene of unimaginable violence.

Just four days prior to the killings, Joseph had been released from the Maine Correctional Center where he had served a sentence for aggravated assault. His mother, Cynthia, had picked him up from the facility, and they had been staying with the Egers.
Following the murders in Bowdoin, Joseph Eaton fled the scene and drove south on Interstate 295. In Yarmouth, he opened fire on passing vehicles, injuring three people. He was later apprehended by police in the woods near the highway. Upon his arrest, Joseph Eaton confessed to the killings of his parents and their friends. An unsigned note found at the crime scene spoke of freeing someone from pain and the writer's desire for a new life.
Joseph Eaton was charged with four counts of murder, and he initially pleaded not guilty and not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. He later changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.
