On a cold January morning in Bangor, Maine, the life of a young woman named Ariah Jacques, a 24-year-old female, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On January 12, 2023, police were dispatched to a residence on G Street in the Birch Hill Estates following reports of a possible domestic violence situation and the sound of gunshots. Upon their arrival around 10:30 a.m., officers were unable to make contact with anyone inside the home.
As the situation unfolded, negotiators and a
special response team were called to the scene. In an attempt to assess the situation without endangering officers, a robot was deployed into the residence. The robot's surveillance revealed an injured person inside. With this discovery, the special response team made entry into the home, where they found the bodies of Ariah Jacques and 57-year-old John Neff, both of Bangor.
The subsequent investigation and autopsies conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta brought clarity to the grim events. It was determined that Ariah Jacques had died from a gunshot wound, and her death was officially ruled a homicide. John Neff's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his manner of death was ruled a suicide. The authorities concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide, with Neff being the sole person responsible for Jacques' death.
Friends remembered Ariah as a kind and caring person who loved music, animals, and had dreams of one day becoming a mother. She was described as feisty and strong-willed, a loyal friend who was always there for those she cared about. The relationship between Jacques and Neff was not publicly known by her close friends, leaving them with unanswered questions in the wake of her sudden and devastating death. The investigation was considered closed pending final reports from the medical examiner's office, with no further suspects sought in the case.
