In the winter of 1901, the community of Virginia City, Montana, was struck by a tragedy that would be remembered for years to come. James Summers, a 38-year-old White/Caucasian man, served as the Sheriff of Madison County. On January 25, 1901, in the line of duty, he met an untimely and violent end.
