James E. Summers, the 38-year-old Sheriff of Madison County, Montana, was tragically shot and killed on January 25, 1901, while attempting to arrest a young man for burglary. The incident occurred in Morgan Gulch, near Virginia City.

Sheriff Summers was pursuing an 18-year-old suspect who had burglarized a rancher's cabin. When the sheriff attempted to serve the arrest warrant, the suspect resisted and fatally shot him.
