In the winter of 1901, the community of Virginia City, Montana, was struck by a tragedy that would be remembered for years to come. James Summers, a 38-year-old White/Caucasian man, served as the Sheriff of Madison County. On January 25, 1901, in the line of duty, he met an untimely and violent end.

The day had started with Sheriff Summers pursuing a lead on a burglary that had occurred at a local rancher's cabin. The suspect was a young man, only 18 years of age. Sheriff Summers located ...
