James Webb, the 42-year-old Sheriff of Yellowstone County, Montana, was tragically shot and killed on March 24, 1908, while attempting to apprehend a horse thief near Roundup, Montana.

Sheriff Webb had received information that the suspect, a man named George Cross, was hiding out at a nearby ranch. Upon arriving at the ranch, Sheriff Webb located Cross in a sheep wagon.
