On October 26, 2014, the life of 26-year-old Whitney Leigh Murphy, a White/Caucasian female from Declo, Idaho, was tragically cut short. She was discovered in her home, having been fatally shot in the head. In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities considered the possibility that she had interrupted a home invasion, as her husband's shotgun was the only item reported missing from the residence.
However, valuable items, including a safe containing a significant amount of cash, were left untouched, casting doubt on the burglary theory.
As the investigation progressed, suspicion turned towards Whitney's husband, Jimmy Lee Murphy. He told investigators that he had been washing his truck and running errands for his employer at the time of his wife's death, but his employer later refuted this, stating no such tasks had been assigned to him. Further evidence began to mount against him. Gunshot residue was found on his hands, which he initially tried to explain by claiming he had been hunting pigeons, a story he later retracted. It was also discovered that just weeks before her murder, Jimmy had taken out a substantial life insurance policy on Whitney. After her death, he attempted to claim the payout but the claim was denied. He also reportedly refused to cover her funeral expenses.
For more than six years, the case remained without an arrest, leaving Whitney's family searching for answers. The investigation took a significant turn in March 2021. After learning that Jimmy Lee Murphy had quit his job and was outfitting a van with plans to leave the area, investigators placed him under surveillance. When they moved in to arrest him, he attempted to flee and had to be subdued with a stun gun. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife's death. The shotgun used in the murder was never recovered. In a chilling detail, it was reported that on the day of her death, Jimmy had sent Whitney text messages urging her to come straight home.
