In the early morning hours of March 12, 2022, a sense of unease settled over a Motel 6 in Rexburg, Idaho, as the sound of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet. A 37-year-old Caucasian female, Iliana Jespersen, was visiting from Arizona with her husband, 49-year-old Jason Jespersen. The couple was staying in a room on the ground floor when the tragic events unfolded.
At approximately 5:33 a.m., dispatchers at the Madison County Dispatch began receiving frantic 911 calls from the motel, with some callers reporting that a bullet had even penetrated the wall of their room.
The Rexburg Police Department responded swiftly, arriving at the scene to a chaotic and frightening situation. Officers immediately worked to evacuate the other guests from the motel, ensuring their safety amidst the uncertainty of an active threat. Due to the cold weather, a bus from the local school district was brought in to provide temporary shelter for the displaced guests. The officers on the scene made multiple attempts to establish contact with the occupants of the room from which the gunshots were believed to have originated, but their efforts were met with silence.
