On a summer evening in Kellogg, Idaho, the life of Kenna Guardipee, a 41-year-old Caucasian woman, was tragically cut short. On June 18, 2023, Guardipee, along with her father, Kenneth Guardipee, 65, and her two sons, Devin Smith, 18, and Aiken Smith, 16, were shot and killed at their home. The family had recently moved into a duplex and were living next door to the man who would ultimately be responsible for their deaths.
The events that led to the fatal shooting began a few days prior
when the neighbor, Majorjon Kaylor, 32, and his wife alleged that Guardipee's older son, Devin, had exposed himself to their young daughters through a window. The Kaylors reported the incident to the police, who investigated the matter. Tensions escalated, and on the evening of the shooting, an argument erupted between the neighbors. Kaylor, armed with a handgun, confronted Kenna and her father. During the argument, Kaylor shot both Kenna and Kenneth outside their ground-floor apartment. He then entered their home and shot her two sons.
Immediately after the killings, Majorjon Kaylor called 911 and confessed to the dispatcher that he had "executed" his neighbors. When police arrived at the duplex, they found the bodies of Kenna and Kenneth Guardipee outside their apartment. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Devin and Aiken Smith. Kaylor was arrested at the scene without incident. He later told investigators that he "snapped" and "lost it" because he felt the Guardipees were not taking his concerns about Devin's alleged behavior seriously.
Kaylor was initially charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. In a plea agreement, the charges were reduced to four counts of second-degree murder, and the burglary charge was dismissed. Kaylor pleaded guilty to the lesser charges. In March 2024, a judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Family and friends described Kenna Guardipee as a hardworking and dedicated single mother who was an adventurous and kindhearted person.
