On the morning of January 21, 2026, 23-year-old Cassandra "Cassie" Clinger Moon was shot and killed by her husband, 43-year-old Christopher Moon, in a tragic murder-suicide in Bonneville County, Idaho. The incident occurred on Jack Knife Creek Road, near the Wyoming state line.
Authorities were alerted to the situation when Christopher Moon himself called 911 at 8:06 a.m. to report that he had just shot his wife and intended to take his own life.
When deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office and Lincoln County, Wyoming Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles parked on the side of the road. They were able to make brief phone contact with Christopher in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and convince him to surrender peacefully. However, moments later, officers witnessed him take his own life with a gun. Both Cassandra and Christopher Moon were pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.
Cassandra, a mother of three young children, was remembered by her family as a fun-loving and compassionate person who was a wonderful mother, sister, and daughter. She was an advocate for mental health awareness and had started a Facebook group to support others who were struggling. Her family said she had been going through a divorce and had recently moved in with her parents, and was in a happy and healthy state of mind at the time of her death.
The perpetrator was identified as Cassandra's husband, Christopher Moon. Due to his death, no arrests were made in connection with Cassandra's murder. Family members described Christopher as having been physically, mentally, and verbally abusive toward Cassandra. In the moments after shooting his wife, Christopher reportedly sent a text message to his mother-in-law, stating "Satan, got ahold of me. I'm so sorry, I love her so much."
