In the quiet town of Buhl, Idaho, a beloved mother, grandmother, and retired teacher, Karalee Ponte Berendonk Shaw, a 73-year-old White female, met a tragic end. On February 25, 2024, a neighbor, concerned about the couple's dogs running loose, discovered the bodies of Karalee and her husband, 72-year-old Lawrence Shaw, inside their home. The discovery sent ripples of shock through the community that knew Karalee for her kind and caring nature.
An investigation by the Twin Falls County
Sheriff's Office soon revealed the grim reality of what had transpired. Authorities determined that Karalee's death was the result of a murder-suicide. They concluded that Lawrence Shaw had shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself. This devastating act of violence cut short the life of a woman remembered for her dedication to her family and her community.
Karalee was born on July 20, 1950, and spent her formative years in Walnut Creek, California. She later moved to Mt. Shasta, California, before relocating to Idaho about five years prior to her death. For over three decades, she was a dedicated childcare teacher, affectionately known as "Teacher Karalee" to the many children whose lives she touched before her retirement in 2018. An active member of her church, she found great joy in her faith and the companionship of her fellow congregants. Her love for animals, particularly horses and dogs, was a defining characteristic, a passion that stemmed from her parents raising Arabian horses. She is survived by her daughter and two sons.
