Andrei Apostolov, a 33-year-old male, had embraced his new life in America with a passion, working as a bartender while nurturing the ambition of one day opening his own café. His friends knew him as someone with a deep love for the country he had adopted as his home.
In the early morning hours of August 30, 2005, Apostolov was outside
Club Five in the 1200 block of 18th Street, NW, when an altercation broke out. At approximately 2:25 a.m., he was assaulted, sustaining severe injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his fight for life ended two days later on September 1, 2005. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
In the immediate aftermath of the assault, a critical opportunity to bring the perpetrators to justice appears to have been missed. Witnesses at the scene reportedly pointed out the individuals involved to the responding Metropolitan Police Department officers. However, for reasons that later became the subject of an internal investigation, no arrests were made that night. The potential suspects were allowed to leave the scene.
