On an evening in Manchester, New Hampshire, the life of Rodney Yancey, a 43-year-old Caucasian male, came to an abrupt and violent end. On April 4, 2023, authorities responded to reports of gunfire on Union Street shortly after 7:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Yancey in front of a multi-unit home on Bell Street, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Office of the New Hampshire Medical Examiner later determined that Yancey's cause of death was gunshot wounds to the chest and ruled it a homicide.
The investigation into Yancey's death quickly identified all parties involved, and police assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. The shooter was identified as 23-year-old Roy Nagle. According to a report from the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, the incident began when Yancey, who was unknown to the residents, entered an apartment at 213 Bell Street through an unlocked door. After being asked to leave, a confrontation ensued outside the residence.
The events escalated when Nagle pushed Yancey, causing him to fall down the porch steps. Yancey then got up, brandished a knife, and advanced toward Nagle. In response, Nagle, who was legally armed, drew his pistol and repeatedly warned Yancey to stop. When Yancey continued to charge at him, Nagle fired three shots. After a thorough investigation, the New Hampshire Department of Justice concluded that Roy Nagle was legally justified in his use of deadly force. The Attorney General's report stated that Nagle acted in self-defense, and consequently, no criminal charges were filed against him in connection with Rodney Yancey's death.
