On New Year's Day 2020, the life of 23-year-old Jonathan M. Gilbert, a White male from Williamstown, Vermont, came to a tragic end. In the early hours of the morning, law enforcement officers came across Gilbert sleeping in his running vehicle. When they attempted to make contact, he sped away, leading to a brief pursuit.
The chase concluded when Gilbert's vehicle crashed into a tree on Rood Pond Road in Williamstown.
Before officers could intervene, and while he was still inside the wrecked car, Gilbert took his own life with a firearm. The incident was investigated by the Vermont State Police.
Initial reports and some online sources erroneously connected his death to a homicide case involving a suspect named Jayveon Caballero. However, thorough investigation and official reports have clarified that Caballero was involved in a separate and unrelated murder case in a different Vermont city and was not a suspect in Gilbert's death. The official cause of death for Jonathan Gilbert was determined to be suicide, and there were no arrests or suspects in connection with his passing.
