In the fall of 2016, a young Hispanic/Latino man named Robert "Robby" Baptista was navigating a life he was trying to turn around. At 21 years old, the male had recently been released from prison in November and was residing at a friend's apartment on Sisson Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He had expressed to his family a desire to get his life back on track. However, his past was not far behind him, and according to law enforcement, he had made several enemies.
Earlier that same year, he was involved in a standoff with police and arrested in connection with a road rage incident where gunfire was exchanged.
On the evening of Saturday, November 12, 2016, tragedy struck. Individuals entered the apartment where Baptista was staying and he was fatally shot in the chest. Investigators believe he may have been ambushed inside the residence. The scene outside the apartment became emotional as friends and family gathered, learning of the devastating news before police could make official notifications. The sudden and violent nature of his death left his loved ones in shock and mourning. His uncle described the killing as a possible vendetta, struggling to understand who would have wanted to harm him.
In the years following Robert Baptista's death, his case grew cold, remaining an unsolved homicide. While detectives acknowledged a number of potential suspects due to his history, they were unable to definitively identify the person or persons responsible for pulling the trigger. The investigation was complicated by the connections and enemies Baptista had made. Witnesses reported seeing multiple people fleeing the scene at the time of the murder, but no arrests have ever been made in direct connection to his death. The case was later included in a deck of cold case playing cards distributed by law enforcement in an effort to generate new leads.
While Baptista's murder remains officially unsolved, a separate incident in November 2018 brought his name back into the spotlight and hinted at the lingering tensions surrounding his death. Two men, Sergio Garcia and Helton Rodrigues, confronted a friend of Baptista's at a convenience store in Pawtucket. The friend was wearing a sweatshirt with a picture of Baptista on it. Garcia and Rodrigues reportedly told the man he would "end up like Robby" before shooting him multiple times. Both men were later apprehended and sentenced to 13.5 years in prison for the assault, but they were never charged in connection with Robert Baptista's murder.
