On June 19, 1908, Special Officer William Wetherspoon Gemmell of the Pawtucket Police Department responded to a dispute between two men. Upon displaying his badge to intervene, one of the individuals drew a handgun and shot him in the neck. Officer Gemmell succumbed to his injuries three days later, on June 22, 1908, at the age of 24.
Officer Gemmell's sacrifice is commemorated by the Pawtucket Police Department, which honors fallen officers who have died in the line of duty.
