In the early morning hours of April 10, 2025, the life of Deanna Lenette Fluker, a 32-year-old African American woman, was tragically cut short in her Whitehaven home in Memphis, Tennessee. Emergency responders were called to the residence on Sullivan Drive around 6:30 a.m. and found Fluker with a critical gunshot wound. She was transported to Regional One Health, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
At the scene, authorities took her boyfriend, 30-year-old Jeremy Buffington, into custody. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death. The investigation into the shooting revealed a grim picture of the events that transpired. Initially, Buffington claimed the firearm had discharged accidentally, striking Fluker. However, the evidence and witness testimony told a different and more violent story.
The couple's two young children, ages six and eight, were present in the home at the time of the incident. They reportedly witnessed Buffington throw a lamp at their mother before the sound of gunshots echoed through the house. Investigators discovered bullet holes in a bedroom wall, three spent 9mm cartridge casings, and the broken lamp, corroborating the children's account of a volatile argument. Faced with the mounting evidence against him, Buffington later changed his statement, admitting that he shot Fluker during the course of their dispute.
