In the early morning hours of April 15, 2023, the life of 15-year-old Isiah Rosario was tragically cut short. A Black / African American male, Isiah was found on the ground next to a vehicle on March Street within the Chad Brown housing development in Providence, Rhode Island, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest. The call reporting the shooting came in around 2:30 a.m., a time when the city was otherwise quiet.
First responders arrived to a scene described as having a large disturbance in the background. Officers performed CPR until he could be rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, but his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
Isiah, a freshman at Concord High School in New Hampshire, had been reported missing by his mother about two weeks prior to the shooting. He was a former Providence resident and had returned to an area where he had friends and acquaintances, a place where his father once lived. Though he was a runaway, a toxicology report later confirmed there were no illegal substances or alcohol in his system at the time of his death. Authorities in Concord had tracked him to the Providence area and alerted local police, but they were unable to locate him before the fatal shooting occurred.
The investigation into Isiah's death has been met with challenges. As of late May 2023, no arrests had been made, and police had not publicly identified any suspects. Detectives have pursued numerous leads and conducted dozens of interviews, but the firearm used in the shooting has not been recovered. Police have dispelled rumors that the killing was related to gang activity or drugs. Instead, investigators have suggested that Isiah was not the intended target, believing he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They have noted possible connections between his death and other recent gun-related incidents in the Chad Brown housing complex. While authorities have expressed that they have some promising leads and an idea of who might be responsible, they are still seeking a critical piece of information to move forward with the case and bring a sense of justice to a grieving family and community.
