On May 1, 1916, Sheriff Frank B. Roach of Laramie County, Wyoming, was killed in the line of duty while pursuing horse thieves near Granite Canyon, approximately 33 miles southwest of Cheyenne. A local rancher had reported the theft of three horses, prompting Sheriff Roach to assemble a posse, which included the rancher, to track down the suspects.
