Troy Lynn Mabbitt, a 49-year-old white man, was killed on March 18, 2018, after gunfire erupted in north Casper, Wyoming. That Sunday afternoon, Casper police were dispatched at about 2:25 p.m. to the 1100 block of Burlington on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed him to Wyoming Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead in the emergency room.
In the first hours after the shooting, authorities emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public, even as the scene became the focus of an active investigation. Police urged anyone who had been in the area—anyone who heard the commotion, saw people moving around the neighborhood, or noticed a vehicle leaving in haste—to come forward with what they knew. The case, they said, hinged on the pieces that only witnesses could provide: who was there, what was said, and what happened in the moments right before the shot was fired.
Within days, reporting on police briefings described an incident involving multiple people, with investigators treating it as more than a simple one-on-one confrontation. By March 20, Casper police were saying the shooter had not been arrested, though they indicated they knew the shooter’s identity and whereabouts. They did not explain publicly why the person was not in custody. Two other people were taken into custody on the day of the shooting, but police said they were later released. Investigators were also working with the Natrona County Attorney’s Office as they evaluated potential criminal charges.
Away from the police tape and the unanswered questions, Mabbitt’s family and friends were left with the sudden, violent rupture of an ordinary weekend. His obituary remembered him as a husband, father, brother, and friend—someone people counted on, someone who could make others laugh, someone taken too soon—and it announced gatherings in the days that followed as those closest to him tried to make sense of a life that ended in an instant.
