On a late summer evening in Amory, Mississippi, the life of 22-year-old Amariontae Kentrale Gates of Houston, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. On Friday, August 28, 2026, while visiting his father's family, Gates was shot and killed in the area of E Avenue. The Amory Police Department received reports of shots fired shortly before 10 p.m. and, upon arrival, found Gates suffering from gunshot wounds. First responders administered medical aid until emergency services arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Another individual was also wounded in the shooting and transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo in serious condition.

Amariontae Gates was described by his family as a loving and caring father to his two young sons. His cousin, Sandra Blanch, recounted how he would always greet his boys with hugs and smiles, and his death has left his family, including his mother, siblings, and children, heartbroken. In the wake of the shooting, Gates's family made a plea to the community to end gun violence, highlighting the devastating and lasting impact it has on families and the community as a whole. Funeral services for Amariontae were scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2026, at Clark Chapel MB Church in Okolona, Mississippi.

In the weeks following the shooting, the Amory Police Department conducted an investigation, appealing to the public for any information and hoping that nearby security cameras might provide leads. Their efforts led to the arrests of three suspects from Amory. Police Chief Ronnie Bowen confirmed the arrests of 19-year-old Caleb James Whitfield, 22-year-old Amorian Nelson, and 22-year-old Aake Buckner. Each of the three men has been charged with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the incident. As of late September 2026, the case is expected to be presented to the Monroe County Grand Jury during its October 2026 session, which will determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. No motive for the shooting had been publicly released.
