Officer John Mahelona was shot and killed in Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 19, 1903, while attempting to apprehend a chicken thief. The incident occurred on Buckle Lane, near the intersection of Liliha Street and Vineyard Boulevard. Officer Mahelona had caught the suspect and was in the process of retrieving stolen property when the thief shot him.
