In May 1997, Sean Burgado, a 27-year-old dietary aide at a Hilo nursing home, failed to show up for work for several days. Concerned, his employer requested a neighbor check on him at his home in the upper Waiakea Uka area.
Upon entering Burgado's residence on Malaai Road, the neighbor made a grim discovery: Burgado's lifeless body. Police were immediately called to the scene. An autopsy later revealed that Burgado had died from gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
